As it is well known, during the autumn season our body is getting ready for winter and it’s so easy to gain weight practically without notice. My readers on Lilka Sky often ask if this can be avoided in any way. So, let’s see what can be done.
WHY DO WE GAIN WEIGHT IN AUTUMN?
First of all, let’s have a look at the behavioral facts. The day becomes shorter, there is less light around and it’s getting colder. Summer fun is behind and the serotonin level is much lower. To cheer up and to warm ourselves we eat more hot dishes and choose more calories intake.
Actually, this process when the weight goes up in the fall season has a scientific explanation. Evolutionary our body has a special mechanism for putting on weight to survive a severe winter ahead. Autumn was a harvesting period, there was a lot of food around. Be aware, our ancestors didn’t see a big problem in some additional kilograms. I think that even more, it was like cool, not everybody could afford it. Even two centuries ago to have some extra pounds was fashionable and showed some privileged status.
However, times changed and nowadays it’s good to have a healthy weight but not overweight.
The other reason why the weight comes up is psychological. The summer with its swimming suits and light clothing is over and we can put on oversized clothes and warm coats, and just relax. If there are any trainers reading this, they can easily confirm that gyms are overcrowded in spring before vacations, but only the most motivated keep coming during the whole year.
HOW TO AVOID GAINING WEIGHT DURING THE FALL HOLIDAYS

Autumn is well known for its seasonal holidays when the risk of overeating is very high. Even if you celebrate at home with the closest family, it’s important to keep some rules to stay slim and feel well. Here are some of them that I’d like to share with you:
- have a good meal an hour before the party
- drink a glass of warm water half before the party begins
- make the most healthy choices and prefer vegetables and whole wheat plant based dishes
- choose one light snack, and eat it very slowly. If you know that it’s impossible, bring your own. For example, if everybody eats potato chips during the movie, feel free to enjoy your favourite packed mixed salad leaves and have fun with everybody
- keep the same strategy with beverages
- remember that the most important is not to eat but to have a good time, and feel well after it
SEASONAL STRESS AND WHAT IT HAS TO DO WITH WEIGHT GAINING
There are also other factors that influence your weight, and one of them is stress. Autumn is a serious season, it’s close to the end of the year, and to making decisions and conclusions. I think you all know people who eat a lot when they are stressed out. Maybe even you are one of them. It is because stress increases hunger hormone ghrelin and cortisol. So these two stimulates the body to eat a lot and to store fat.
These can be beaten up with exercising. Everything is good, home yoga and regular walking will reduce stress and help to feel better.
MINDFUL NUTRITION, SERETONIN, LIGHT AND THEIR INFLUENCE ON YOUR WEIGHT
To tell you the truth, I don’t think the person has to have a serious seasonal affective disorder to feel a little blue during the fall season. Lack of lightening lowers the production of serotonin in our body. To boost this process some emotional people eat a lot of high calories starchy foods and this leads to weight gain and even more problems with mood, because of digesting difficulties.
The solution is to spend more time in a place with good natural lighting, even if it is your balcony, and to switch on additional lamps at home.
Practice mindful nutrition, make every mealtime special. Try it and I promise you won’t regret.
And the last but not the least. If you want to cheer or warm up, there are a lot of other ways to do it. You need to remember, that food is fuel, so let it be it. Life is so beautiful and interesting, fix your weight problems, don’t lock yourself around them.
